Note: The spelling of this surname began in Germany as Menges. It is not clear to me when the spelling was changed to Mingus. It would appear that the spelling was changed before the birth of Moses Mingus, a soldier in The American Revolutionary War. I base this on the photo of his grave marker. This may not be a good basis for that theory since it is likely that the grave marker is not original, but has been replaced.
